Buddy Gheen, co-founder and lead compositor of Massive State Digital, is an Emmy-award winning visual effects artist bringing 20 plus years of experience. With over 250 credits in TV and film, Buddy has a long track record of providing creative solutions and workarounds for complicated shots, delivering on time and exceeding client expectations.

Buddy started his career in the mid 90’s, creating on-screen graphics for 24 frame playback on multiple seasons of NBC’s  “Profiler,” CBS’s “CSI” and other TV shows for Los Angeles based visual effects company E=MC2. He later transitioned into compositing and began supervising the E=MC2 visual effects department. He was responsible for titles including Universal Artist’s horror film “Jeepers Creepers,” FOX TV’s “FreakyLinks,” NBC’s “Hidden Hills,” and Frank Herbert’s “DUNE,” the Sci-Fi Channel mini-series that received a 2001 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special. Buddy followed his eight years at E=MC2 with a two year stint in Taiwan as visual effects supervisor for Double Edge Digital, successfully delivering shows for multiple productions including several titles for the Discovery Channel.

After working as a visual effects supervisor at Double Edge Digital in Taiwan, Buddy joined Los Angeles based LOOK Effects in 2006 where he earned a reputation as “the shot doctor” for his ingenuity in quickly turning around complicated sequences. He used this talent for pivotal sequences in Summit Entertainment’s “Step Up 3D,” ABC’s “Lost: The Final Season,” and FOX Searchlight’s Academy Award winning “Black Swan” for which Buddy designed the look and workflow of Natalie Portman’s skin transformation into the title character. Detailed explanations of his work on “Black Swan” were featured on the CG Society and mocha by Imagineer Systems websites.

While at LOOK Effects, Buddy worked as the lead compositor on the team primarily responsible for delivering 150 plus episodes of primetime television. Along with co-worker Christian Cardona, Buddy delivered four seasons of FOX’s “Bones” for which they received Emmy and VES award nominations in 2012, the complete season of its spinoff “The Finder” and the complete first season of AMC’s “TURN: Washington’s Spies.”  Buddy’s additional film credits while at LOOK Effects include compositing for Regency Enterprise’s horror film “Mirrors,” 20th Century FOX’s “Avatar,” Disney’s “The Muppets,” and Fox Searchlight’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

In 2014, Buddy officially partnered with Christian Cardona to form Massive State Digital, which has been responsible for the majority of the season of “State of Affairs,” NBC’s drama with Katherine Heigl, and season 5 of “Arrested Development” for Netflix as well as a dozen feature films including “A Haunted House 1 & 2” starring Marlon Wayans.
